Wings and Wine is at once everything you’d think it’d be, and also so much more. The festival is sponsored by Upstate Wine Country so you know the wine selection is superb. With a mission to promote local products and community awareness, Wings and Wine drives at the heart of what makes festivals of this type so pleasant to visit: good products and even better atmosphere. Amongst the music and the delicate foods is a sense of community indicative to this area of the state. Something at once refined and yet all too wild.
For the part of the wines, the selection is very impressive, and the offerings grow larger and more diverse every year. Wineries from all over the state converge to show off their wines, and more wineries are clambering to be a part of the action. In fact, Upstate Wine Country is the recent name change from NEPA, a change done so to include wines from New York State. The price of admission gets you a complimentary wine glass and free samplings from all the wineries. Special emphasis is on chicken wings – and they are delicious. However, more traditional wine pairings such as cheese, chocolate, and pastries are also available.
At Wings and Wine, “wings” is a bit of a homonym. Of course the chicken wings, that’s obvious. The unexpected treat is the vintage planes on display. The festival takes place adjacent an airfield. Weather permitting: there is adrenaline pumping activities like air shows and even sky diving. Much tamer by comparison – yet oh so steadfast in quality – are the specialty foods and handcrafted goods. A craft show of roughly fifty vendors is on hand to promote their goods. Everything from specialty foods to jewelry to fabrics is on sale. Also, did we mention the airplanes!
Admission is moderate and parking is free.
