In its unadulterated intimacy, People’s Choice Festival is possibly one of the most tranquil and genuine art festivals around. Held at the Pennsylvania Military Museum in Boalsburg, this quaint yet expansive festival is literally wrapped in a cocoon of art vendors, and then blanketed in towering green mountains. People’s Choice started in 1993 as a way of showcasing strictly Pennsylvania artists. Since it’s beginnings, People’s Choice Festival has morphed into a spectaular platform for the very best in local artists.
A tireless goal of People’s Choice is to keep the festival family-oriented, and they succeed in tall order. A youth tent runs all week long and showcases some of the very best and intuitive art from young people in the area. Adjacent that is a kid’s zone replete with fun activities . Events through the festival include hundreds of shows and live music acts between two main stages. Both areas are not only covered, but filled with seats and tables. In addition to all the specialty cafes in walking distance to the festival, there are a plethora of local and national food vendors, including fresh squeezed lemonade, amazing sausage sandwiches and not one, but two of the best barbeque vendors in the state.
While some people may think People’s Choice risks being seen as the little brother to it’s neighbor festival Artsfest, the notion is really moot. The fact is that People’s Choice does draw crowds all their own. The art itself is familiar, even pastoral. But the vendors and the crowds are somehow more relaxed in a field where things are cooler, opposed to the sometimes oppressive heat of town. The vendors are from PA exclusively, and the work is of a continually exceptional quality. In short, the People’s Choice fits its name. A testament to that are the returning crowds of visitors and the vendors who have been with the festival from its inception.
