On the second weekend in the beautiful Ligonier Valley, the Flax Scutching Festival spans a weekend in Stahlstown, Westmoreland County. Over 100 years ago, it was suggested that a gathering should be held in the center of town. The main attraction would be the scutching of flax and making of linen – an age old practice.
Early in the season, the flax is grown right in town, then harvested for the festival. Costumes from the turn of the century are worn by the demonstrators.
As of this writing admission is very affordable and grants access to the fairgrounds, attractions and all demonstrations. Parking is provided for free.
