Allegheny Burger Festival

You think basketball tournament and think, “good time!”  You think burger cook off and you think, “good time!”  What happens when you mix said basketball and burgers?  Enter the Allegheny Burger   Festival.  This awesome soiree is a collaboration of all things burgers with the added kick of a weekend-long basketball championship.  Started in 2011, this festival is extremely fresh on the festival circuit but is quickly picking up notoriety, and with good cause.  I mean c’mon, its burgers and basketball!

Before any games are played or patties flipped, local businesses join forces to throw a celebratory Monster Burger challenge.  Contestants struggle through a true test of endurance as they try to consume a massive ten pound burger, a feat yet unaccomplished.  Friday brings the first official day of the Allegheny Burger Festival and the amateur cook-off where anyone can register to compete for the immortal title of “Burger Master”.  Trophies and cash prizes are awarded for Best Traditional Burger, Best Veggie Burger, Best Non-Traditional Burger.  Professional burger vendors from all over the state fire up the grills Saturday and Sunday to serve up patties for hunger customers.  These vendors, work feverishly to push out the best burgers in a competition of there own.  Awards to the best vendor burgers are given out at the end of the weekend.

The basketball side of this equation is the Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.  This weekend long bout is open to all teams which pre-register.  All through the day both Saturday and Sunday teams compete through the bracket to arrive at the big championship game.  The experience is as much fun for the spectators as it is for the athletes and the competition, while congenial, is in no way diminished.  On Saturday, a slam dunk contest is open to all brave souls who register beforehand.  As the afternoon turns to evening, the shopping booths start to pack up and the courts clear.  As the air cools, the burgers stay hot and live music plays through the evening.
